Police swoop in on MCG

Victoria Police is ready to roar as the state gears up for an almighty clash at the 'G.

With record crowds expected to flock the CBD and City of Yarra this long weekend, police have planned for a strong, around-the-clock presence to ensure the safety of all footy goers.

The significant presence will begin ahead of Friday's Grand Final Day Parade, continue in and around the MCG on game day, and go well into the evening as supporters celebrate or commiserate at licensed venues across the city.

Hundreds of general duties police will be supported by the Water Police, Mounted Branch, Highway Patrol and Public Order Response Team to ensure those visiting the city not only feel safe but are safe.

With tens of thousands expected to soak up the footy fever at Friday's parade, police will have coverage on the ground, in the water and in the skies to ensure the family-friendly event is enjoyable for all.

Those heading to the MCG on Saturday can expect to see police in public, membership and corporate areas with a strong focus on responsible service of alcohol.

This enforcement will continue in Richmond, Collingwood and wider Yarra area with uniform and plain clothes police working in and around licensed venues to ensure public order and compliance with liquor licensing.

Transit police and PSOs will also be at public transport hubs to ensure commuters get to and from the city safely.

Those driving should know inner city roads are likely to be busy so planning ahead is encouraged.

Victoria Police has undertaken significant planning and worked closely with the AFL, stadium management, security providers and licensees to ensure the festivities are safe and secure for the entire community.

"We'll have a bolstered presence the entire weekend and will be working around the clock to keep you safe.
