Police update 1: Homicide investigation at Hamilton

A post mortem is currently underway in relation to a body located at Hamilton yesterday afternoon (July 19).

The post mortem has established that the body is that of a female of Asian ethnicity.

Positive, legal confirmation of the identity of the female may be days or weeks away, however, distinctive jewellery located on the body has been identified by the family as belonging to 30-year-old Qiong YAN, a Chinese national.

Police have spoken to Ms Yan's mother today.

Ms Yan was reported to New South Wales police as a missing person on April 12.

Twenty-six-year-old Yang ZHAO, also a Chinese national, appeared in a New South Wales court today.

A Queensland warrant for one count of murder was issued for Mr Zhao yesterday. Queensland police have sought his extradition.

Operation Tango Mahogany has commenced in relation to this investigation and involves detectives from South Brisbane District, the Homicide Investigation Unit, intel specialists and forensic and scenes of crimes officers.

The unit in Parkside Court, Hamilton remains a crime scene. There is no further information available at this time.
