Police can confirm one person has died following the earlier single-vehicle crash on SH6, Lower Shotover.
The road remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene.
Traffic travelling from Lake Hayes to Queenstown is not seriously impacted at this time.
However, traffic travelling from Queenstown to Lake Hayes is diverted via Arthurs Point.
