Do you have a backyard pool or spa? Did you know that State Government legislation means that private pools and spas must be registered with Local Councils?
Director Development and Planning Heather Green said Council had a dedicated Pool and Spa Auditor assisting with the rollout of current swimming pool and spa legislation.
"The State Government introduced laws in 2019 to ensure safety around pools, especially for children.
"Residents were required by 1 November 2020 to register their backyard swimming pools and spas with local Councils, however local data is showing us that many pools in the municipality are still not registered.
"Fines can total $1600+ for failing to register pool/spa within the relevant timeframe," Ms Green said.
Ms Green said registering pools and spas is the first step in the process.
For pools/spas constructed before 1 November 2020, the due dates for lodging Compliance certificates are as follows for pools built:
- On or before 30 June 1994 - 1 June 2022
- From 1 June 1994 until 30 April 2010 - 1 June 2023
- From 1 May 2010 until 31 October 2020 - 1 June 2024
Once pools have been registered, owners will be advised about the timing and practicalities of having their pools inspected.
Ms Green said every four years pool and spa owners must have a registered building surveyor or inspector certify that their safety barrier is compliant.
"New rules ensure that fencing is checked every four years and if it is not compliant, it must be repaired and made safe and any repairs undertaken, as directed - our Pool and Spa Auditor can assist residents through this process," she added.
