Energy Exports At 10-year Low: Australia

Physical energy exports fell to their lowest level in 10 years in 2024-25, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Jonathon Khoo, ABS head of environment statistics, said, "Physical energy exports - that is, the physical sources of energy like coal, liquified natural gas, uranium or crude oil - have fallen overall by 3.1 per cent."

"Black coal was still Australia's largest energy export, but fell by 1.1 per cent, followed by LNG, down 2.2 per cent."

Renewable energy production continued to increase, up almost 10 per cent in 2024-25 after a 5 per cent increase in 2023-24.

"Solar remained Australia's largest renewable energy source, up 11 per cent, while wind production increased 15 per cent," Mr Khoo said.

"Overall, Australia produced nearly 40 per cent more electricity from renewable sources than households used."

"Per person energy use has fallen by 16 per cent over the last 10 years, as our population has grown faster than total energy use" Mr Khoo said.

Total household energy use increased by 0.3 per cent in 2024-25.

Petrol, electricity and natural gas remained the main energy products used by Australian households in 2024-25.
