Portsmouth Launches UK's Biggest Health Research Program

Portsmouth residents of all ages are to be invited to join the UK's largest health research programme.

Our Future Health aims to transform the prevention, detection and treatment of conditions such as dementia, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. With up to five million volunteers across the UK, the goal is to create one of the most detailed pictures ever of people's health.

Appointments for Portsmouth residents will be at the Boots store on Commercial Road.

People who volunteer will provide a blood sample, have their height and weight measured, and their blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels taken. They will also be given information on how to understand their results and recommendations on what steps they should take if any results show cause for concern.

In the future, volunteers will also be given the option to receive feedback about their risk of some diseases and have the opportunity to take part in cutting-edge research studies.

While there are immediate benefits for many in having a health check, the project is research-driven and aims to paint a detailed picture of health in the UK, ensuring medical research is targeted at the right health concerns so more can be done to detect and diagnose disease earlier.

Scientific researchers at the University of Portsmouth have been invited to take part.

Professor Sherria Hoskins, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Health, said: "The University of Portsmouth is delighted to be supporting Our Future Health to recruit regional participants. This is a project that will benefit our region's knowledge of its health needs and will inform the regional services of the future."

Dr Raghib Ali OBE, Chief Medical Officer at Our Future Health, said: "Our Future Health has the scale and ambition to play an important role changing our approach to healthcare in the UK. We want to see a shift from focusing mainly on treating ill-health to a future where we do more to stop people becoming unwell in the first place.

"With more clinics than ever, thousands more people can volunteer for our programme to find out new information about their own health, and help future generations live healthier lives for longer."
