Prahran Square awarded for construction excellence

Kane Constructions Pty Ltd have been announced the winner of the Excellence in Civil Construction award at the 2020 Master Builders Excellence in Construction Awards.

Recognised for their work on Prahran Square, Kane Constructions took just under two years to complete what is to-date the city's largest every construction project.

Prahran Square is the $60 million transformation of the old Cato Street car park into 10,000 square metres of multi-functional urban parkland, above 500 underground car parking spaces. The development increased parking capacity by 20 per cent and turned what was otherwise a hot and dusty bitumen car park into a green and inviting space.

Designed by Lyons Architects and ASPECT Studios, the park has nine distinct areas arranged around a central square featuring a fountain. An abundance of seating, a large expanse of lawn, thousands of plants and trees, play equipment, quality amenities and an immersive public art experience add to what has become a must-visit destination next to the popular Chapel Street.

The design of the square and carpark below incorporated best practice in building design and ecologically sensitive features, solar energy generation and stormwater capture and management.

Prahran Square also provides an important green link between Grattan Gardens and Princes Garden and is a focal point in the public space network.

Since opening in December 2019, Prahran Square has grown in popularity and has fast become a place for the community to gather, relax, celebrate and enjoy their neighbourhood.

Congratulations to Kane Constructions for this well-deserved award.
