City of Darwin's annual Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up is now complete, with more than 790 tonnes of waste collected from across the municipality in preparation for cyclone season.
Of the waste collected, nearly 40 per cent was diverted away from landfill and donated to charity, sent to the recycle shop or recycled.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said it was a tremendous effort, particularly the amount separated for reuse and recycling.
"By reducing, reusing and recycling our resources, we can achieve better environmental outcomes such as reducing waste disposed of to landfill and the associated greenhouse gas emissions," he said.
"City of Darwin has made a commitment to be recognised as a clean and environmentally responsible city and one of the ways we can achieve this is by reducing the waste we create.
"There are many ways to reduce waste and the amount that ends up in landfill, from making better choices about what you buy to reusing what you can and choosing the correct bin for disposal," Mr Vatskalis said.
The Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up is a free verge collection service to remove unwanted household items that are too big for the kerbside wheelie bin.
Items are collected and taken to the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility where they are sorted for reuse and recycling.
