Prevention Best Form Of Diabetes Treatment: RACGP

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has urged the public to consult their GP in an effort to save lives by preventing diabetes.

The call comes at the start of National Diabetes Week, with diabetes the seventh most common cause of death in Australia.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said GPs can help prevent people from getting diabetes or to diagnose and treat the disease at its earliest stage.

"Diabetes is serious, and one of the most common chronic conditions facing the community, and it is important that we stay diligent in doing all we can to prevent it," Dr Wright said.

"It is much better to prevent diabetes than to treat it, and we encourage people to see their GP, get tested and have regular check-ups. This year for National Diabetes Week we are trying to encourage earlier diagnosis as well as preventing diabetes with a focus on lifestyle intervention.

"Serious complications are likely if diabetes is not treated properly. Almost 120,000 Australians have developed diabetes in the past 12 months, and this has a significant impact on the lives of not only those carrying the disease, but also the people who support them."

In total, almost 1.9 million people have diabetes in Australia, including approximately 1.5 million known people with diabetes and more than 400,000 Australian who are currently undiagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

"GPs are well placed to diagnose and support our patients," Dr Wright said.

"We manage these cases every day and often work with other health professionals in the effort to reduce diabetes in Australia.

"If you're worried or unsure about being at risk, come and see us – it could save your life."
