Prisoner escape conspiracy charges

WA Police Force's State Security Investigation Group detectives have charged two men, including a sentenced prisoner, in relation to an alleged conspiracy to free the prisoner from custody.

It will be alleged from October 2020 onwards the prisoner communicated with an associate via coded messages to develop and execute an escape plan.

It will be further alleged the plan involved the intention of sourcing firearms and other associates to facilitate the escape.

Yesterday, Thursday 18 February 2021, detectives from the State Security Investigation Group executed search warrants at the prisoner's prison cell at Casuarina Prison and at his associate's residence in Huntingdale. Items of interest to the investigation were seized.

A 24-year-old male prisoner and a 24-year-old man from Huntingdale have each been charged with 'Conspiracy to commit indictable offence (forcibly frees, or attempts to free, from lawful custody, any person serving a sentence for murder)'. They have been refused bail and are due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today, Friday 19 February 2021.

Detective Senior Sergeant Sean BELL, Officer in Charge of the State Security Investigation Group, said the police investigation moved quickly to disrupt the escape plan.

"Given the network of associates the two accused men have, which includes outlaw motorcycle gangs and members of right-wing extremist groups, there was a real risk there would be an attempt to execute the escape plan.

"As a result of our investigation and disruption, no actual risk to the community eventuated."
