Professional Advice For Budding Musos

Corangamite Creative Youth provides opportunities for young musicians to play at local festivals and events. But how do young musicians get the experience they need to be ready to play in public?

"There's a big difference between playing at school or at home with friends and performing in public, and our young people have told us there's nothing in between locally," Council Manager Economy and Prosperity Katy McMahon said.

The Corangamite Creative Youth music mentoring/jam session will provide young musicians with the opportunity to bridge the gap in a casual, supportive environment.

The free event will be held at the Theatre Royal in Camperdown from 6:30-9 pm Friday 13 June.

"The mentors are local working musicians who have played at multiple festivals and events in the area," Ms McMahon said.

"Solo artists, duos and bands with at least one member aged between 12 and 25 with a connection to Corangamite Shire are welcome to apply.

"It's not a practice session but not quite a performance and the supportive mentors will help young performers improve their technical skills and stage presence.

"The aim is to give young musicians an opportunity to develop tight, well-rehearsed performances which will build their confidence to perform at other events."

Professional sound engineering and backline equipment such as drum kit, amps, microphones, keyboard stand, speakers and stage monitors will be provided.

Musicians just need to bring their instruments and drumsticks.

The session is funded by the State Government's Amplify youth development program, formerly known as FReeZA.
