Nationally, Queen Mary is now one of more than 30 organisations and companies who have committed to supporting their staff through professional registration and ensuring access to continuing professional development opportunities.
The programme provides a range of support for employers, like Queen Mary, who have made the commitment to champion the values of professional registration and support eligible staff throughout the process of becoming professionally registered, as well as recognising staff who have become registered.
The Science Council attended the recent Queen Mary Technical Staff Symposium on Tuesday 13 September where the University was awarded a plaque by the Science Council to recognise its commitment to the ground-breaking scheme; as well as congratulating the five members of staff who have been supported in becoming professionally registered over the last two years.
The Science Council's External Relationships Manager Jane Banks presented Queen Mary's Technician Commitment Lead, Anne Parry, with the plaque. The Council's CEO Helen Gordon was unable to attend, but recorded a speech delivered at the symposium.
Helen Gordon, Science Council Chief Executive, said: "Congratulations to all the staff here at Queen Mary University of London who have already achieved professional registration, we're delighted that the university will be supporting others to achieve external recognition for the high standard of technical expertise that technicians bring to the organisation."
Queen Mary was proud to become a signatory of the Technician Commitment in 2018, a university and research institution initiative, aiming to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines. At Queen Mary, we recognise that the talents and expertise of our technical staff community are essential to maintaining the quality of teaching, the success of our students and the impact of our research.
The Science Council Award has been achieved as part of Queen Mary's 36-month Technician Commitment Action Plan (2022 - 2025). Developed by a cross-faculty steering group made up of technical representatives from all three of Queen Mary's faculties (Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences and Medicine and Dentistry), as well as academic and professional service representatives and consultation and feedback from our technical community.
Anne Parry, Faculty Director of Operations for Science and Engineering, said: "I am delighted that Queen Mary University of London has received Employer Champion status from the Science Council. Our ambitious 2030 Strategy has people at its very centre and this recognition highlights our ongoing commitment to opening the doors of opportunity for our staff and students.
"We look forward to building on this success as we implement our three-year Technician Commitment Action Plan and will continue to support our staff in achieving professional registration to highlight their skills and accomplishments."
