Queensland Rail statement 1: Freight train derailed at Nelia

An update from Queensland Rail Head of Regional Jim Benstead:

At 6.40pm last night (7 July 2022), a third-party freight train derailed between Nonda and Nelia (east of Cloncurry) on the Mount Isa line.

Thankfully, no one was injured.

The wagon remains upright and site inspections are currently underway to assess the damage.

As a result, the Nonda to Nelia section of the Mount Isa line has been closed to rail traffic.

Queensland Rail will work with the relevant parties to investigate the incident.

The Inlander service which departed Mount Isa at 5.15pm yesterday terminated at Cloncurry last night. Customers are currently being conveyed by a road coach from Cloncurry to Townsville.

Further updates will be shared with community, freight partners and stakeholders as investigations continue and recovery efforts progress.
