The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is working in close partnership with multiple agencies to enhance the safety and security of passengers across Queensland's public transport networks.
With a shared focus on building a secure and reliable transport system ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, the collaborative approach aims to ensure a safe and seamless experience for passengers both now and into the future.
This ongoing collaboration between QPS, Translink, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Brisbane City Council (BCC), the Public Safety Group (PSG), and private security services enhances public transport safety for millions of Queenslanders every day.
Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman said these partnerships play a key role in ensuring safe, secure, and reliable transport services for all Queenslanders.
"Each and every day, millions of Queenslanders use public transport networks to connect them to their destinations, whether it be for work, visiting loved ones or for travel," Assistant Commissioner Wildman said.
"As frontline workers, we strive to ensure the public feel safe when accessing transport and collaborative approaches are the key to ensuring secure and connected networks.
"To ensure public safety across these networks, police regularly conduct patrols, wandings and engage with the community.
"Through teamwork and shared commitment, we're striving to uphold safety every time someone steps onto a bus, ferry, tram, or train."
Across the public transport network, six categories of authorised officers contribute tirelessly to safety and customer experience. These include:
- Senior Network Officers (all modes of public transport)
- Network Officers (buses)
- Senior Protective Service Officers (buses and busways)
- Customer Service Officers (light rail)
- QPS Railway Squad (trains and train stations)
- Authorised Officers (trains)
Real-time support is bolstered by help phones and emergency buttons placed throughout the network, including all busway station platforms, inside trains, in designated train station safety zones, at tram stations, and at major transport hubs.
More than 4,600 CCTV cameras actively monitor stations, providing an additional layer of safety and enabling security interventions in real time.
This network of personnel and technology works every day to maintain safe conditions and respond swiftly to incidents, ensuring the wellbeing of commuters across South East Queensland.
The collaborative efforts of QPS and its partners are part of a long-term strategy to create a world-class public transport system, ready to welcome visitors from all over the world during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
These improvements are supported by measures such as police and security patrols, plain-clothes officer operations, and enhanced community engagement programs.
Acting Senior Sergeant Shayne Treasure, Railway Squad Transit Tactician, said community members form an important part of maintaining safer networks together.
"It's not just about what public services do but how communities can contribute by looking out for each other and using tools available to ensure everyone's safety," Acting Senior Sergeant Treasure said.
Passengers are encouraged to approach transport staff when assistance is required, or to use emergency help points, found on platforms, trams, and buses.
