These incredible palms are among the largest fan palms in the world, with huge circular leaves stretching several metres across. Mature trees can grow up to 20 metres tall, with some reaching as high as 30 metres.
What makes them so special?
- Gebang Palms only flower once in their lifetime
- It can take between 30 and 80 years before they bloom
- When they flower, they produce enormous flower spikes carrying millions of tiny flowers
- After fruiting, the tree completes its life cycle and dies
- Around 10 palms at Lake Alexander are flowering, making this a rare natural event you won't want to miss.
City of Darwin will also be collecting seeds from the flowering palms to help grow future generations of Gebang Palms.
