Hawkesbury City Council reveals the revitalised Hawkesbury Artist Trail, replacing flood-damaged signage from 2001 and highlighting significant artistic and cultural locations across the region.
Supported by $33,845 in funding through the NSW Government's Create NSW Arts and Culture Priority Needs Program, alongside financial contributions from Hawkesbury City Council, this cultural project offers new ways for local and visiting audiences to engage with the Hawkesbury region's natural landscape.
Developed in 2001 as Hawkesbury Artists Trail…In the Steps of the Masters by Hawkesbury City Council and Friends of the Hawkesbury Art Community Inc. (FOHACaRAG), the Hawkesbury Artist Trail celebrates the region's rich artistic heritage, highlighting locations that inspired prominent Australian artists, particularly those associated with the Heidelberg School. The original trail was supported by A Federation Fund Project 1901 – 2001 grant, a Commonwealth Government initiative, and consisted of 12 interpretive signs installed across Freemans Reach, McGraths Hill, North Richmond, Pitt Town, Windsor, and Richmond.
Following the 2020-22 floods, 10 of the 12 interpretive signs had been significantly damaged by floodwaters and debris, leading them to be illegible.
Through the NSW Government funding, Hawkesbury City Council in partnership with FOHACaRAG has not only replaced the damaged signage but completely revitalised the project with new designs and expanded text panels offering a consistent and engaging visitor experience across the trail. Appealing to contemporary audiences, the updated signage includes QR codes linking to dedicated webpages on the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery website, where visitors can view the full trail information including Google Maps links wherever they are from their own device.
The revitalised trail strengthens the Hawkesbury's cultural tourism offering a resource for residents and visitors to rediscover the landscapes that inspired some of Australia's most celebrated artists, while ensuring the region's artistic heritage remains accessible for future generations.
