Council is running a bumper program of swim classes at Cessnock and Branxton pools from November 2026 to March 2027, with enrolments now open for the first lessons.

Two highly experienced local swim instructors will deliver the Swim and Survive curriculum - a program developed by Royal Life Saving NSW/ACT/TAS that teaches children aged 3-13 swimming skills as well as safety and confidence in the water.

The following program has been confirmed for the 2026-27 season:

  • Weekly 30-minute learn-to-swim classes for ages 3-13 at Cessnock and Branxton, Saturdays from 14 November to 19 December (with a pre-assessment at Cessnock pool on 7 November)
  • Intensive daily 30-minute learn-to-swim classes for ages 3-13 years, plus Mums/Dads/Carers and Bubs class for infants ages 6-36 months, from 4 January to 22 January 2027 - with an option to enrol for one, two, or three weeks of daily lessons
  • Aqua Moves classes - suitable for all levels of fitness - Cessnock pool Tuesdays and Thursdays 8.30am-9.15am from 17 November 2026, Branxton pool Fridays 10am-10.45am from 20 November
  • Weekly 30-minute learn-to-swim classes for ages 3-13 at Cessnock and Branxton, February-March 2027

Cessnock City Deputy Mayor Sarah Pascoe encouraged the community to get involved with the learn-to-swim program.

"This is a great chance for children to learn and improve their water safety and swimming skills from experienced teachers in a fun environment," said Deputy Mayor Pascoe.

Council's Aquatics Facilities Coordinator Chad McCamley said he expected the Aqua Moves classes to be popular.

"Our qualified aqua fitness instructor Sam will guide participants through a low-impact group exercise routine in shallow water in a supportive environment that suits people of all fitness levels - whether you're already active, or are starting your fitness journey.

"Just drop by Cessnock or Branxton Pool for an Aqua Moves class on the scheduled day - no bookings required," said Mr McCamley.

Call learn-to-swim instructors Cassie at Branxton pool (0429 261 320) or Trish at Cessnock pool (0438 433 565) during business hours weekdays to enrol, or book a spot on assessment day.
