Read Out: Minister Freeland speaks with Juan Guaidó, Interim President of Venezuela

Toronto, Ontario - February 14, 2019

Today, in advance of meetings with her European counterparts in Munich, Germany, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke with Juan Guaidó, Interim President of Venezuela. They discussed Venezuela's path forward to restore democracy through free and fair elections, and the role of the international community in that process and beyond.

Interim President Guaidó restated his commitment to a peaceful transition to democracy, in line with the Venezuelan constitution. He underscored the importance of getting humanitarian assistance to the people of Venezuela and mentioned that plans are underway to accomplish this on February 23, with the support of neighbouring and European countries.

Minister Freeland reiterated Canada's continued support for Interim President Guaidó's leadership in helping Venezuela return to democracy. She emphasized her belief that the democratic aspirations of Venezuelans will prevail through determination and unity.
