Regional traineeships supporting careers and communities

  • $1.9 million funding to invest in regional trainees across Western Australia
  • Cook Government helping build a skilled workforce in the regions

The Cook Government is supporting regional communities across Western Australia to grow and thrive, with a $1.9 million investment in traineeships to boost local workforces.

A total of 50 communities from Bremer Bay to Tom Price, and the eastern Goldfields, will benefit from Regional Traineeship Program grants, tailored to meet the needs of individual locations.

The funding backs traineeships across information technology, aged care, business administration and marketing, library and information services, tourism, civil construction, horticulture, primary health care, youth work and community services.

Regional Development Minister Don Punch made the announcement yesterday afternoon at the Waroona Community Resource Centre (CRC).

The Shire of Waroona will use its grant to enable a trainee to undertake a Certificate in Business Administration or Work Skills to enhance their local CRC's service.

The trainee will be mentored by CRC staff and build skills in business operations, reporting and accountability, while gaining vital work experience by attending board meetings and other functions.

More than 270 trainees from across the WA Community Resource Network and local government have benefitted from the Regional Traineeship Program over the past five years.

Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Don Punch:

"The Regional Traineeship Program is helping regional communities to build their workforce capacity, while trainees acquire skills and develop career pathways in a supported environment.

"There is a diverse range of traineeships this year - all have been tailored to the unique needs of each community.

"Communities around our vast State have benefited from this program for several years now, helping attract and retain local workers and improving services to residents and businesses."
