Thanks to the incredible support of the community, Murray River Council locals have recycled an impressive 1 million bottles, cartons, and cans since the launch of the Moama Return and Earn Depot in October 2024.
Moama Return and Earn Depot is operated by Murray River Council and provides a bulk return solution for the Murray River region.
Mayor Cr John Harvie said the facility offers fast, friendly and efficient container returns to make it easy for local residents to cash in their eligible bottles and cans.
"We are proud of the dedication and enthusiasm shown by locals in utilising the Moama Return and Earn Depot."
"It's great to see the community embracing the scheme. Every container returned is one less container in landfill, so it's a great example of how small actions can lead to big impacts," he said.
The environmental impact of recycling 1 million containers instead of producing new ones is staggering. Users have contributed to:
- Energy savings equivalent to powering 11 households for a year.
- Water conservation equal to filling 2 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
- Landfill reduction by avoiding 6 garbage trucks' worth of waste.
- Carbon dioxide emissions reduction on par with taking 45 cars off the road for a year.
The Moama Return and Earn Depot is located at 91 Centre Road, Moama. It is open from 8:00am- 4:30pm, Monday to Saturday.
