Townsville City Council is asking residents to give Townsville businesses the ultimate gift this Christmas by shopping locally.
Mayor Jenny Hill said many local businesses were still feeling the effects and uncertainty of the COVID-19 global pandemic.
"Some of our local traders are still hurting and struggling to keep the doors open," Cr Hill said.
"One of the best things we can do this festive season is to spend money locally.
"When you're purchasing gifts, food or decorations, I urge you to think local first."
Cr Hill said shopping locally ensured money circulates through the region's economy and supported jobs.
"The average Queenslander is set to spend more than $1,000 on presents, food, alcohol and eating out this Christmas," she said.
"We know for every $1 spent with Townsville businesses, around $1.43 goes back through the community, and every $1 million spent in our region, up to nine full-time jobs are supported.
"The large variety of retailers in Townsville also means you're guaranteed to find something to put under the tree or on the table this Christmas."
One of the initiatives Council has rolled out to help support local businesses this Christmas is to allow free two-hour parking in the city during December.
Drivers will not need a ticket for all parked spots marked with a 2P sign.
