Latest figures from the WA Police Force and feedback from local businesses show Operation Heat Shield is beginning to bear fruit.
WA Police Force data shows officers have apprehended and dealt with 53 more offenders in relation to robbery offences in the October to December quarter, compared with the same period the year before.
Also, there were 134 more offenders caught for retail theft offences in the October to December quarter, compared with the same period the previous year.
The State Government has provided the WA Police Force with an additional $5 million to fund extra policing hours, and run specific operations targeting retail theft, burglaries and robberies.
Since Operation Heat Shield has been in effect, police have stepped up patrols at suburban centres, the Perth central business district, shopping, entertainment and transport hubs.
Police advise the additional presence has resulted in a greater willingness by retailers to report incidents.
A direction by the WA Police Force for officers to proffer the more serious charge of robbery when incidents of retail theft involve violence, has also led to a greater number of offences now being recorded as robberies.
As stated by Police Minister Michelle Roberts:
"Operation Heat Shield has resulted in more police on the ground and a much more visible police presence.
"This has allowed them to respond more immediately when incidents occur, apprehend and charge those offenders.
"Our tougher measures have led to greater confidence for businesses to report retail theft, fuel drive offs and robberies and this is reflected in these latest figures."
As stated by Perth MLA John Carey:
"I have had personal feedback from both residents and retailers that have noticed and strongly welcomed the increased police presence in the city - seeing more cops on the beat matters.
"A visible police presence in our CBD and Northbridge gives greater confidence and a sense of safety.
"Along with a range of other measures including three-hour free parking on the weekends, a showcase of summer events and Activate Perth's Fill This Space program, we are giving people a reason to come into our city.
"It's all part of the McGowan Government's focus to support small business and create a more vibrant, people friendly city."
