Rockhampton Zoo is proud to launch an exciting new opportunity for local teens, today opening applications for its first-ever Youth Conservation Program.

The initiative invites locals aged 14 to 16 to take part in a hands‑on conservation experience that will be held at Rockhampton Zoo during April.

With 16 positions available, Chair for Parks, Sport and Public Spaces, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said the zoo is calling on local teens with a passion for protecting wildlife and the environment to apply.

"We are absolutely thrilled to announce Rockhampton Zoo's Youth Conservation Program today and the fantastic opportunities it brings our region's young people," Cr Rutherford said.

"Whether you dream of working with animals, are passionate about protecting wildlife and the environment, or simply want to make a difference in shaping the future of our planet, this program gives an exciting and rare chance to start that journey.

"We know how passionate our community is about wildlife, and we know this is going to be something really special."

Across four inspiring days, participants will get behind-the-scenes insights from zoo professionals and work on real conservation issues facing wildlife today.

Rockhampton Zoo Director, Liz Bellward, said the program is designed to spark curiosity and empower young people to see themselves as part of the conservation story.

"As part of the inquiry-based program, participants will take a deep dive into a topic of their choice and develop creative solutions, supported every step of the way by our team," Ms Bellward said.

"They'll investigate real‑world issues – everything from habitat loss to species protection - and explore the roles that zoos, communities, and individuals can play in creating change.

"At the end of the program, the group will have the chance to present their thoughts and ideas in a special exhibition for families, zoo staff, and the community.

"We are really excited to roll out this program and want every participant to walk away feeling empowered, informed, and inspired."
