Payments made to Western Australian seniors under the McGowan Government's Safety and Security Rebate scheme have now passed the $4 million mark, far exceeding initial expectations and the previous demand for the scheme before it was abolished by the previous Liberal-National Government in 2015.
The scheme, which commenced on August 22, 2021, allows WA Seniors Card members to claim up to $400 on the purchase of eligible safety and security items that meet Australian Standards and are installed by a licensed tradesperson.
Since the rebate was launched, over 1,000 businesses have been involved in delivering or installing eligible items to WA Seniors Card members, providing a welcomed boost to the local safety and security industry.
10,808 claims have been paid to WA Seniors Card members under the scheme so far.
The $12 million program provides WA Seniors Card Members with a rebate of up to $400 for the purchase and installation of devices such as:
- home alarms or CCTV systems;
- security door screens;
- deadlocks;
- security window screens or window shutters;
- security sensor light;
- WiFi or wired video doorbell;
- mains powered smoke alarm;
- fire extinguishers;
- fire blankets; and
- repairs on eligible items listed above.
WA Seniors Card members can make one claim per eligible household and only purchases made on or after August 22, 2021 are eligible.
To meet the requirements of the Safety and Security Rebate, items purchased must meet the relevant Australian Standards and any installation work required must be carried out by a licensed tradesperson.
Many safety and security equipment suppliers also provide discounts to WA Seniors Card members. A list of suppliers providing discounts to WA Seniors Card holders is available here.

"I also remind people to do their research before buying a safety or security item to ensure it is eligible, including checking that the item complies with the Australian Standards and ensuring it is fit for the intended purpose, and to get multiple quotes where possible to ensure you get the best price.
"When engaging a contractor to install an item, please also ensure they hold the required licence to perform the installation, whether it is electrical work or a security installation.
