Satellite Tech Unveils Land Height and Sea Level Shifts

NTU Singapore has launched the first of four new reference stations to better monitor changes to Singapore's land height and sea levels.

This initiative follows a four-year partnership inked between Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) announced in June last year.

Led by the EOS, the new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference station is located at Lazarus Island.

Data collected by the station will be sent back to EOS, for researchers to analyse and produce more accurate estimates of sea-level in Singapore. It will augment the country's climate change response under the Singapore National Sea Level Programme, which is meant to aid in national projections of future sea levels.

NTU has plans to install the second reference station in Punggol, with the third and final locations to be determined.

The four new stations will also contribute to and strengthen the existing network of nine reference stations across the island managed by SLA.
