Schools learn the waste & recycling rules

Snowy Monaro Regional Council's Resource and Waste education team have been visiting schools across the region this month, delivering new Return and Earn bins and teaching kids how to manage waste responsibly.

Stopping in at Jindabyne Central School (JCS) this week, Council's Resource and Waste Education Officer conducted an audit of the school's current Return and Earn bin. With the help of two JCS students volunteering as Junior Recyclers, the contents were emptied onto a tarp at the school assembly for all to see.

The results were mixed, with lots of the correct cans and bottles, but also many items that should have been emptied, recycled, or thrown in the rubbish bin.

The kids' answers grew more confident as the Resource and Waste Education Officer explained item-by-item what they need to look out for, in order to use the new Return and Earn bins correctly.

JCS's volunteer junior recyclers conducted an interview with Council's Education Officer at the assembly, asking questions from their class about waste and recycling.

"It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm our young people have for this important topic," said Mayor Peter Beer, Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

"These sessions put on by our employees and volunteers are a valuable way of teaching younger generations how to dispose of waste responsibly, and how to recycle right."

Return and Earn is the single largest and most successful program of its kind in the state and is part of a NSW State Government initiative to increase recycling and waste diversion.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council is proud to be a partner in delivering better outcomes for our community and our planet.
