Science Week Reveals Nature's Secret Language

  • Western Australia set to celebrate National Science Week, now in its 28th year
  • This year's theme is 'Decoding the Universe - Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language'
  • Funding distributed to 19 local organisations for community events across the State

National Science Week is set to kick off in Western Australia, featuring dozens of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities and events across the State.

Running from 9 to 17 August 2025, National Science Week is Australia's largest annual celebration of STEM.

This year's theme for National Science Week is 'Decoding the Universe - Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language'.

The week provides opportunities for Western Australians to explore and celebrate science by taking part in activities, in-person and online events, talks, podcasts, at-home activities and competitions.

Across the week dozens of events and activities are planned, ranging from wildlife encounters and environmental studies to community stargazing events and hands-on family activities.

In 2024, 248 registered initiatives were held in local communities across the State.

Recently appointed Chief Scientist of Western Australia Professor Sharath Sriram will also serve as Patron of National Science Week in WA.

In WA, the National Science Week activities are co-ordinated by the Western Australian Coordinating Committee (the WACC), a group of WA STEM organisations working together under the Inspiring Australia initiative, supported by the Australian Government, Scitech and the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification.

In 2025, the WACC has distributed nearly $90,000 worth of grants to 19 organisations for community events across the State.
