Lake Macquarie City Council
A strange pink or red algae plume has been spotted in Lake Macquarie.
It's a naturally occurring algae, called Noctilluca Scintilla, or sea sparkle or sea twinkle, a red alga which often comes out in the sun after periods of rain, such as we have experienced the last week.
While it is not considered dangerous, it can cause skin and eye irritation in some people.
The algae is most common during this time of year – but its short lived. After around 24 hours it dies, changing from a pink to a light mauve colour, and sinks.
"Council environmental officers will continue to monitor the algal bloom and provide advice as required."
