The Concentric Influences of Sol LeWitt Project in partnership with RMIT Gallery will open a major free exhibition and public program on 5 June 2026.
At the centre of The Concentric Influences of Sol LeWitt: Foundations, Pivots and Place exhibition is a Sol LeWitt wall drawing - the first public LeWitt wall drawing developed and exhibited in Victoria in nearly 20 years.
An aspect of LeWitt's revolutionary practice is that his work exists as sets of instructions that are interpreted and physically realised as wall drawings on-site. Over 50 artists and RMIT staff and students assisted in bringing the work to life as part of the installation.
The exhibition is instigated and directed by Dr Irene Barberis, RMIT School of Art, and co-curated with Helen Rayment, RMIT Galleries Manager.
This exhibition emerges from Barberis' long-term friendship and mentorship with the esteemed American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt. The LeWitt wall drawing has been generously loaned by the LeWitt family and Estate for The Concentric Influences of Sol LeWitt Project.
"I selected this wall drawing because it demonstrates the conceptual generosity of Sol LeWitt. It allows so many people the opportunity to participate in his work, a non-hierarchical and democratic artwork," said Barberis.
Helen Rayment said the exhibition marks the presentation of a major international work at RMIT Gallery.
"Bringing a work like this to RMIT is a rare opportunity. It allows audiences to encounter a LeWitt work up close, and experience its scale and presence in the gallery," said Rayment.
