The University of Southampton has secured three top 100 rankings in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2026.

The rankings assess over 1,600 universities around the world against the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Southampton achieved top 100 rankings for Climate Action, Sustainable Cities and Communities and Life on Land.

The University also ranked amongst the top 200 for six other goals and placed in the top 200 universities overall for the second year in a row. The UK has the highest number of top 200 institutions amongst the 116 countries taking part.

Professor Phillip Wright, Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Southampton, said: "I'm delighted that the outstanding sustainability work of our university continues to be recognised in the Times Higher Education Impact Ratings.

"We've made sustainability an integral part of how we operate, teach and conduct research. This provides a strong foundation for our new Sustainability Strategy as we work towards net zero and ensure sustainability is at the heart of everything we do."

The Impact Rankings demonstrate universities' commitment to addressing the world's most pressing challenges, including environmental sustainability, social inclusion, economic growth and partnerships.

The University of Southampton has cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by around 30% from the 2018-19 baseline, with the goal of being net zero by 2035.

In recent years it has also embedded sustainability across its taught programmes, adopted more sustainable investment practices, and established the Sustainability and Resilience Institute (SRI).

Professor Simon Kemp, Deputy Director of the SRI and university lead for sustainability education, said: "This is very much a collective effort of the whole of our university community and demonstrates our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals internally, nationally, and internationally."

"I'm also proud that the SRI has been a catalyst in getting innovative research off the ground, establishing influential partnership networks, and equipping our students with the knowledge to make a difference."

Dr Alice Brock, Sustainable Development Goals Project Officer at the University, added: "To be amongst the top two hundred universities globally for nine Sustainable Development Goals is a huge achievement and demonstrates our ambition to change the world for the better."
