Special Cemetery Event Brings Community, Solace

Connect with your community and remember your loved ones at this Saturday's Mother's Day Memorial.

The special event at Belgian Gardens Cemetery is a chance for those who have lost their mothers, grandmothers, aunts or children to find solace and community ahead of Mother's Day.

The memorial will include words of reflection with Townsville celebrant Amanda Medill and gentle music by Alex Salvador.

Divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the event was about more than just grief.

"Grief and loss are two important parts of a healthy community when these burdens and truth of life are shared with others. Council's Mother's Day Memorial is an uplifting and affirming morning to connect with members of your community and to remember your loved ones in a safe and inclusive space," Cr Greaneysaid.

"Days of celebration can be difficult when you have lost someone you love, but sharing your feelings and surrounding yourself with people who can empathise makes carrying the burden of loss easier.

"This event will include a chance for attendees to share a poem in memory of their loved one, participate in mindfulness craft activities and to listen to words of reflection and gentle music."

Rotary Club of Townsville Saints President Louise Lodge said the group was pleased to offer its support of this event for another year.

"Since the Forever Garden opened in 2022, Rotary Club of Townsville Saints have worked alongside Council and the community to help create these very special events," she said.

"The garden holds a special place in our hearts. Our members are so proud of the Forever Gardens and how they have evolved over these past few years. We're really looking forward to connecting with many members of the community on Saturday - the Forever Garden has been created especially for them."

The Mother's Day Memorial at Belgian Gardens Cemetery will run from 8.30am to 10am this Saturday. Participation is free.

Refreshments will be provided and attendees can receive a native plant to take home to memorialise their loved ones.
