Splash of green for Tamworth Global Gateway Park

The planting of approximately 13,000 endangered native trees and shrubs has begun at the Tamworth Global Gateway Park (TGGP) and will continue for the next couple of weeks to establish the Park's green zones. Green buffer zones will be planted along the Oxley Highway, Marathon Street and the corner of Goddard Lane and Wallamore Road to create green screens along the main roads and help beautify the new development.

Plans for an approximately 25-hectare green zone surrounding Murroon Creek are also in place, but the planting of this area will occur later in the Park's development once further earthworks have been undertaken.

Critically endangered species of eucalyptus endemic to the local area, specifically White Box, Yellow Box and Blakely's Red Gum, have been selected to occupy these green zones and have been growing as saplings offsite. Other native shrubs such as species of wattle and bottlebrush will also be planted in addition to native grasses.

Peter Resch, Director Regional Services said the selection of native plants is consistent with Council's Blueprint 100 strategy, which seeks to ensure that the development of new infrastructure follows sustainable design practices.

"By choosing plants endemic to Tamworth, we are not only creating a better outcome for our natural environment, but these plants are also likely to have a higher rate of survival long term," he said.

The landscaper contracted by Council to carry out the planting have been contracted for a two-year maintenance period to ensure that the plants are properly cared for during the plants' initial establishment.

Fully funded by Tamworth Regional Council, approximately $790,000 will be invested into these landscaping works. This will include plant and grass seed supply, plant installation and maintenance for buffer zones and street trees. This funding will also include the construction and installation of entrance signage in mid-2022.
