State Gun Laws Tie to County Suicide Rates

JAMA Network

About the Study: An analysis of firearm suicide rates across 637 U.S. counties from 2000 to 2023 found that five state firearm laws, including extreme risk protection orders, handgun purchase permit requirements, and child access prevention laws, were associated with lower firearm suicide rates. States with a greater number of these laws tended to have lower firearm suicide rates, while no similar associations were observed for non-firearm suicides.
