Statement on Chief Ministers Scheduled Trip to Japan

NT Government

Chief Minister Eva Lawler has postponed her scheduled trip to Japan this coming week due to the unfolding weather situation in the Northern Territory.

A number of communities in the Territory are under flood warnings.

We are seeing flooding and limited road and rail access along the Stuart Highway and Victoria Highway, with 500m of rail washed away between Tennant Creek and Katherine.

Roughly 20 residents from the remote community of Pigeon Hole have recently been evacuated to Darwin.

The Chief Minister will be staying in the Territory with her focus on making sure all Territorians have access to freight, fuel, accommodation and safety.

The Chief Minister will reschedule this job creating and investment cementing trip at a later date.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister Eva Lawler:

"Nothing is more important to me than the safety and wellbeing of Territorians. This is why I will be staying in the Territory to ensure we have plans in place to respond to this weather event.

"At this stage our infrastructure corridors are becoming inaccessible. We are working on plans on how we can get supplies into the Territory.

"Territorians are mine and our Government's number one priority. We will make sure we get our infrastructure corridors back up and running. I will not be going anywhere until I know all Territorians have the supplies and access that they need."
