Digital Outreach Boosts Statin Refills in Low Adherence

JAMA Network

About the Study: In a randomized trial conducted within Kaiser Permanente Northern California, digital outreach produced a modest improvement in short-term statin refill rates among patients with cardiovascular disease or high cardiovascular risk who had fallen behind on their prescriptions. A second reminder further improved refill rates among initial nonresponders, while switching to a different type of message offered no additional benefit. These findings support adaptive, sequential health system outreach strategies to improve cardiovascular prevention when integrated into population health programs; however, the majority of patients continued to not refill their medications.
