Stop Work Application Dismissed

Orange Council

An application to stop work at the Orange Regional Sporting Precinct has been dismissed.

The application by Mr Paul Towney was submitted to the Federal Government's Heritage Department under the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

It related to the significance of the area in accordance with Aboriginal tradition and the threat or desecration that would be consistent with those Aboriginal traditions.

During the approval process for the Sports Precinct, Council undertook significant engagement with all relevant parties, including the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council and Indigenous Elders.

Orange Mayor Tony Mileto said the DCCEEW finding supported the work Council had put into the project prior to construction starting.

"We are pleased this application has been dismissed. We are keen to keep working to deliver this project that will be the leading regional sports precinct in the state. The Orange Regional Sporting Precinct is a whole of community facility," he said.

"The Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council has been a strong supporter of this project and again this week has come out in support of a facility that is for the whole Orange community."

Orange City Council would like to thank Member for Calare The Hon. Andrew Gee and Member for Orange Phil Donato for their ongoing support of the project and in this matter.

DCCEEW stated in its notification to Orange City Council that based on the information available it was not satisfied "that the specified area is a 'significant Aboriginal area' for the purposes of section 18 of the (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Ilsander Heritage Protection) Act."
