Supporting community members in digital world

Community members will be supported to learn new skills to navigate digital platforms, making it easier to connect with each other, the City and council.

The Enhancing Digital Access for the Community initiative responds to an increased reliance on digital technology. A variety of the City’s meetings, programs and services have shifted to digital platforms in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which some community members have difficulty using.

Easy-to-understand instructions will be developed to assist people with low levels of digital literacy, as well as training workshops in partnership with libraries, neighbourhood houses and community organisations.

An employee will be available to provide resources and possibly phone and/or in-person to assist with digital platforms, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Skype.

A ‘how-to’ reference page will be created on the City’s Geelong Australia website, featuring step-by-step guides, links to official instructional videos and an option to request a hard copy of instructions.

This project reflects the City’s commitment to continuing to build an accessible and inclusive community for all.

A funding allocation of $25,000 has been set aside for this initiative, as part of a broader package of COVID-19 support measures.

Ensuring all members of the community, including the elderly and those from diverse cultural backgrounds, can access services and interact with the City and council is paramount.

Increasing digital literacy skills will also help community members virtually connect with family and friends, which can reduce feelings of isolation and improve wellbeing.
