Facilities and community organisations across the City of Yarra will benefit through lower energy costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions thanks to new funding from the Victorian Government and Yarra City Council.
Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, the Hon Lily D'Ambrosio MP, joined Yarra Mayor, Cr Sophie Wade, to visit Burnley Backyard and its community garden in Richmond.
Burnley Backyard was one of seven projects across the municipality to receive funding under the Victorian Government's Community Climate Change and Energy Action fund.
At Burnley Backyard, the Victorian Government and Council will jointly fund the installation of solar panels and energy-efficient LEDs to help local operator, Richmond Community Learning Centre, offset electricity consumption, reduce costs and lower their CO2 emissions.
Yarra Mayor, Cr Sophie Wade, said this was an excellent example of State and local government working together to achieve local outcomes.
"The Community Climate Change and Energy Action fund is an important program that upgrades local facilities and delivers real and tangible outcomes for local organisations."
"There are so many important benefits from this project. It upgrades local infrastructure to be more sustainable, helps Richmond Community Learning Centre to reduce their energy costs, and decreases local emissions: this project gets a big tick of approval from Council."
Other projects funded by the Community Climate Change and Energy Action fund in Yarra, include:
- Solar installation at Walker St Community Kindergarten
- Solar installation and facility upgrades at Richmond Multicultural Children's Centre and Clifton Childcare Cooperative
- Facility upgrades at North Carlton Neighbourhood House, Dancehouse Carlton Hall and North Fitzroy Neighbourhood House
