Supporting Tasmania's students to return to school

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The Rockliff Liberal Government is supporting students to access, participate and engage in learning in 2024.

Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch said the Tasmanian Liberal Government is doing what matters by helping families as they prepare to send students back to school.

"Our Government's Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) provides assistance to students from low-income families or people experiencing financial stress to ease the cost of levies," Minister Jaensch said.

"We are doing this to ensure students in Kindergarten right through to Year 12 have access to the educational services they deserve.

"Some families will be eligible for levy relief, which means they won't have to pay the levy charge, subject to certain conditions.

"We also encourage families who do not meet the eligibility criteria to contact their school directly for a confidential discussion about financial assistance, including payment plans or other help.

"If levies can't be paid a student will not miss out on any education opportunities."

For a family with three school age students, this may provide a saving of more than $1000 per year.

"The Rockliff Liberal Government is tackling the cost-of-living pressures, which are as a result of rising interest rates as well as rising food and petrol costs," Minister Jaensch said.

"We will continue to do what matters for all Tasmanians and to provide young people with equitable access to the education and training they need."
