Surprise birth on plane for unaware passenger

A woman on a KLM Royal Dutch flight from Guyaquil, Ecuador, to Amsterdam gave birth unexpectedly mid-flight last Wednesday.

Tamara, who was unaware that she was pregnant, was travelling to Spain via Amsterdam when she experienced stomach pain and went to the bathroom. To her surprise, she ended up giving birth to a baby boy in the airplane bathroom, NL Times reports.

Tamara named the baby Maximiliano, after one of the passengers who assisted her during the delivery. According to a spokesperson for the Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem Zuid hospital, Tamara had no idea she was pregnant and was taken aback by the event.

Two doctors and a nurse from Austria were on the plane and helped the new mother following the birth. The airline spokesperson said that they are grateful to the doctors and nurse for their help.

Upon landing at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Tamara and her baby were taken by ambulance to Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem Zuid hospital. The hospital said that both mother and baby were in good health and received proper care. The hospital also said that as soon as possible, Tamara and Maximiliano will travel to Madrid.

The flight, KLM 755, was a one-hour shuttle that left Quito for Guayaquil, before continuing on to Amsterdam. Tamara was planning on taking an additional flight to Spain after arriving in Amsterdam. The hospital spokesperson said that the team in the birthing department did everything possible to ensure that both Tamara and Maximiliano received proper care and were on their way for the necessary paperwork for Maximiliano.
