An event dedicated to advancing continuing education in lower limb preservation and diabetic foot care across Australia will be hosted at The University of Western Australia this month.
The 2nd Annual Limb Preservation Symposium will bring together multidisciplinary professionals to share knowledge, challenge assumptions and collaborate in improving patient outcomes from Thursday 8 October to Saturday 10 October.
Symposium co-chair Dr Jamie Weaver, from UWA's School of Health and Clinical Sciences, said this year's program included dedicated sessions on cultural safety in limb preservation, strategies to restore blood flow and a closing gala dinner to foster collaboration and professional connection.
"We particularly encourage participation from rural and remote healthcare providers, whose perspectives are vital in shaping effective and practical limb preservation care nationwide," Dr Weaver said.
International keynote speakers include Professor Luca Dalla Paola MD, Ferrara University's School of Medicine in Italy, who specialises in endocrinology, metabolic diseases and diabetology, and is an expert in medical and surgical treatment of diabetic foot; and Dr Daniel Powell, from Georgetown University in the United States, who will be speaking on early research around mental health in the limb preservation journey.
"There will be a segment on the Aboriginal patient journey through limb preservation by UWA's Dr Renee Silvester, as this population is dramatically more impacted by amputation and access to care," Dr Weaver said.
The symposium will include presentations on nutrition interventions, pharmacology, emerging technology and techniques, amputation outcomes, bone infection and wound care, and will conclude with a panel discussion on the future of limb preservation.
The event starts at 9am on Thursday 8 October at The University Club of Western Australia and concludes with a gala dinner on Saturday 10 October during which awards will be announced.
