Aged Care

Increased demand for hospital services, particularly from an aging population, remains a significant challenge in the Territory.

One of the main causes of bed block at our Territory hospitals is due to the high number of long-stay aged care patients admitted.

Today, there are 92 long stay, aged care patients living in NT hospitals because there are no beds available in residential aged care.

NT Health is not funded to provide aged care but is spending about $40 million a year to provide this service, highlighting the significant need for additional aged care services.

Accessing medical care

If you are experiencing a health emergency, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance.

Medicare Urgent Care Clinics provide free medical care when it's urgent but not an emergency.

There are six Urgent Care Clinics in the Northern Territory. You can walk in to receive bulk billed urgent care. To find a clinic visit the After Hours Medical Care here page on the NT Health website.

If you are unsure of how to manage your illness or injury, visit www.healthdirect.gov.au [http://www.healthdirect.gov.au/?fbclid=IwAR2q8dU8p4mXIL66SYk1qAVe8AZf-33mSRId3gfEBMqjpljQ4aCxC8FctDs] or call Healthdirect for free on 1800 022 222.

Emergency response

A boil water alert remains in place for Nauiyu, Palumpa and Jilkminggan.

NT Health is continuing to monitor evolving weather conditions across the Territory and will plan for, and manage the delivery of health services and resources accordingly.

NT Health staff are working hard to provide quality, patient-centred care. Please be kind to our people during these periods of high demand.
