This is the second year in a row the annual memorial service is held in Taiping. Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Defence Attachés and Advisers were joined by representatives from the Malaysian Armed Forces, Malaysian Veterans' Associations, and representatives of local societies and schools in honouring those service personnel and civilians who served their countries in both World Wars and other armed conflicts. The service this year marks 78 years since the end of the Second World War.
The service began with a performance by the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry pipers.
The British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Ailsa Terry CMG then delivered her address saying:
Remembrance Day unites across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service of the Armed Forces community from United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. I am truly honoured to have this opportunity to host my first Remembrance Day service in Malaysia. The Taiping War Cemetery is a fitting site for us to honour the fallen and their legacy. Lest we forget.
The service continued with a reading of 'In Flanders Fields', delivered by Mr. Paul Baker, British Veteran and 'The Soldier by Rupert Brooke' by Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Amreek Singh. Defence Advisor, Captain Antony Stockbridge then performed a reading of the 'For the Fallen' by Robert Laurence Binyon.
After observing two minutes of silence in respect of the fallen heroes, the ceremony ended with the traditional laying of wreaths at the base of the Cross, a solemn tribute to those who gave their lives in the name of peace.
