Tasmanian Service Providers Strain Under Cost of Living Crisis

Tas Labor

Tasmanian families are doing it tough.

With many individuals choosing between heating and eating, paying their rent or buying essential medications, Tasmanians are increasingly turning to service providers for help.

Today, I am joined by Salvation Army Launceston Corps Officer Roderick Brown, whose organisation is experiencing an increase in people seeking support.

Typically, the Salvation Army experiences a drop in demand throughout June and July, however the need for assistance this year has escalated.

Almost half of those who have presented to the service have needed help with paying their rent and power bills.

Reducing the cost of living is Labor's number one priority and under our Right Priorities Plan we will make a start of fixing the mess the Liberal Government has created in its 10 years in office.

A Labor Government will cap power prices at 2.5 per cent for three years in its first 100 days in government, saving the average Tasmanian household $500 a year.

We also have a plan to make housing more affordable and will increase the number of rental properties available in the state to meet demand, helping to push down rental prices.

Too many Tasmanians have been left behind by Premier Jeremy Rockliff's minority Liberal Government. Labor's Right Priorities Plan is about delivering better essential services so that no Tasmanian is left behind.
