Tasmanians taking up quarterly car registrations in droves

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

Tasmanian vehicle owners are taking advantage of the Tasmanian Liberal Government's action to introduce quarterly payments for light vehicle registrations in their droves.

We know that bills for six monthly or yearly car registrations can be tough on the cost of living, especially for low income earners, which is why we introduced the new quarterly option.

I'm pleased to announce that quarterly registration renewals have proven very popular since their introduction in July last year.

It's clear that this initiative is providing meaningful and practical financial relief for many Tasmanians.

As at 20 May 2022, 189,474 quarterly registration transactions for light vehicles have been processed – equating to approximately 35 per cent of all registration transactions.

And more than 83,000 Tasmanians have used the quarterly payment option at least once.

Modifying the fee structure was a vital component of the initiative, to further reduce the financial burden and enable quarterly payments to be a cost-effective option for Tasmanians.

For example, the $20 stamp duty has been smoothed out over 12 months, rather than payable every transaction, and administration fees have been reduced.

In addition, with the cooperation of the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB), the MAIB premium surcharge was abolished.

Having the option to pay every three months means registration renewals are easier to pay, easier to budget, and importantly, Tasmanians can keep their car registered and therefore insured.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is taking real action on cost of living pressures for Tasmanians.
