Tasmanians to remain vigilant as flooding event continues to unfold

Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

Recent flooding has devastated our communities in the North and North-West and Tasmanians are again being advised to prepare for more over coming days.

The preparation for the flooding over the last 10 days has been fantastic and has saved lives.

While we know our communities may be fatigued, we need people to continue to be vigilant and heed warnings.

The SES has stood up the State Operations Centre again to oversee the rainfall, to inform alerts, and our excellent emergency services will continue to monitor this over coming days.

This weather is expected to continue to develop into next week, with Monday and Tuesday expected to be the wettest days.

Our emergency service organisations are doing an amazing job, and they are working 24/7 to ensure that we are all kept safe throughout this weather event.

There will be a long road ahead for recovery – and Tasmanians who recently experienced this terrible flooding can be assured all levels of government are acting swiftly to deliver financial and physical support.

Immediate financial support is being provided to 17 Local Government Areas through a joint Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement. This support includes Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payments of up to $1,000 for adults and $400 for children.

The Tasmanian Government is also providing Emergency Assistance Grants of up to $1,000 ($250 per adult, $125 per dependent child) as well as Temporary Emergency Accommodation for those who cannot safely return to their home and have access to no other accommodation.

We know there will be more to do as we continue to assess the impacts and we look forward to announcing further financial support for our businesses and primary producers very soon with the Australian Government.
