Teens Charged in Assault on Bus Driver, Passengers

Two teenage girls have been charged after they allegedly assaulted a bus driver, passenger and two American tourists in Sydney's CBD today.

About 8.15am (Sunday 17 May 2026), officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command were called to the intersection of George Street and Haymarket Street, Sydney, following reports of an assault.

On arrival, police were told two girls aged 16 and 17, and a 19-year-old man, had allegedly assaulted a bus driver and a passenger – both 35-year-old men – before they were removed from the bus.

The girls then allegedly assaulted two American tourists – two women aged 27 and 28 – on the street.

The bus driver, passenger and tourists were all assessed; however, none required medical treatment.

The two girls were arrested at the scene and taken to Day Street Police Station, while the 19-year-old man was issued a move on direction which he complied with.

Following inquiries, the younger girl was charged with common assault (three counts), and the older girl was charged with one count of common assault.

Both girls were refused bail to appear before a Children's Court tomorrow (Monday 18 May 2026).

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
