  • They will be constructed by a Queensland family-owned business

Eight tiny homes are on their way to Gympie later this year to help address housing pressures in the region.

The Palaszczuk Government is delivering the tiny homes to house those in need of emergency accommodation.

Residents are expected to move into the eight tiny homes in the second half of 2023.

The homes will be constructed at a family-owned business in Brendale north-west of Brisbane and are due to be installed at the Gympie Recovery Accommodation Park (GRAP).

GRAP was a joint project between the Queensland Government and Gympie Regional Council after floods devastated the town in February last year.

GRAP was initially designed to provide short to medium term accommodation for people affected by the 2022 floods. It has now transitioned to also being used to house people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Quotes attributable to the Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch:

"Tiny homes are an innovative way to get a roof over people's heads, none more so than in places like Gympie, where the vacancies rates are tight.

"The new housing stock being delivered to Gympie will help to address the urgent need for more accommodation in the region.

"We know that renters are doing it tough right now and the key to addressing this challenge is bringing more housing supply online – and that's exactly what the Palaszczuk Government is doing.

"From 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2022, the Palaszczuk Government delivered 45 additional social housing dwellings in the Gympie and Fraser Coast Local Government Areas (LGAs), bringing the total number of Government owned social housing homes in those areas to 1707.

"This is in stark contrast to the infrastructure lag caused by the terrible housing record of the former LNP government, which saw no social housing dwellings commenced or delivered in those areas in 2015.

"Statewide, the Palaszczuk Government has delivered more than 4000 new homes across the state since 2015-16 as part of its record $3.9 billion investment in social and affordable housing.

"We are on track to commence 13,000 new social and affordable housing dwellings across the State by 2027."
