A Chinese-British dual national who was a senior member of the Sam Gor criminal syndicate has been jailed for 15 years for his role in a conspiracy to traffic commercial quantities of illicit drugs within Australia from 2012 to 2013.
The man, 70, was sentenced by the Melbourne County Court today (30 April, 2026) to 15 years' imprisonment. He will be eligible for parole after serving nine years and three months.
He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to traffic commercial quantities of border controlled drugs, contrary to section 302.2(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The 70-year-old was extradited from Bangkok to Melbourne on 11 June, 2022, to face the charge.
The AFP established Operation Volante in 2012 to investigate international triad syndicate Sam Gor, and its drug trafficking network in Australia.
At its peak, the Sam Gor syndicate was the biggest trafficker of methamphetamine to Australia.
AFP Assistant Commissioner Hans Koenderink said the sentencing closed the chapter on one of the most significant international investigations in AFP history.
"This final Operation Volante sentencing is the culmination of 14 years of hard work and perseverance from our investigators and international network," Assistant Commissioner Koenderink said.
"This result showcases there is no corner of the globe where criminals can hide from the consequences of their actions.
"The AFP will continue to supercharge our global operations to defend and protect Australia's future from domestic and global security threats."
