Top honours for Yagan Square and Scarborough at UDIA Awards

  • Yagan Square awarded for Excellence in Urban Renewal
  • A unique, transit-oriented community space celebrating Whadjuk culture
  • Scarborough Foreshore revitalisation wins Government and Public Use category

Yagan Square has won the Western Australian Urban Development Industry Association (UDIA) WA Award for Excellence in Urban Renewal.

The square - the flagship public space of the Perth City Link project - won the award for transforming the previously unused desolate land into a unique, transit-oriented community hub that celebrates the site's rich history and cultural significance.

The WA Government's Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority worked closely with other government agencies to deliver the project that involved sinking Perth's central transport rail and bus infrastructure underground.

Collaboration with the Noongar community through the Whadjuk Working Party was central to the project to ensure the cultural authenticity of the square extends far beyond its name, infused throughout the design, public artworks and landscaping in the space.

Yagan Square has helped reconnect the Perth central business district with Northbridge and as part of Perth City Link has come a long way since the project was initiated 10 years ago under the previous Labor Government.

Scarborough Foreshore was also recognised for delivering a series of contemporary recreation spaces, outstanding amenities and improved beach access, cementing Scarborough as one of Australia's best beachfront destinations.

As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Yagan Square, and the broader Perth City Link project, is a shining example of what can be achieved with foresight and proper precinct planning.

"It is a quintessential Western Australian destination where local, interstate and international visitors can meet, connect, discover and celebrate right in the heart of Perth.

"This award acknowledges the success of early, meaningful and proactive engagement. Yagan Square embodies the true spirit of reconciliation and is a place that will be enjoyed by people of all ages for generations to come.

"METRONET will provide further opportunities to enhance our communities and public spaces in years to come to improve the lifestyle for our growing population."
